I always like to start off by reviewing the book itself and the cover. So in that regard I like the thought of the cover but I don't think it was the best cover for this book. The cover does give the reader a picture of what Lylah, the main character looks like, but if it had been at a bookstore, I would not have picked it up based solely on the cover. Though, we know we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, most of us do. The title I did like. It was a big thing in the book and it can have so many meanings; so, I very much liked the title. As far as the book itself, it was very thick, but I don't mean that it had too many pages, what I mean is that the stiff binding made it hard to hold the book. Every few pages or so I had to bend the spine to get it to open, it was tough to hold without doing that as it kept wanting to close. The font though, is nice and big and the book is actually quite a fast read. Had I not been in classes every day it would've taken me just a couple of days to read.
Now to what's in the book, the story. When the author first inquired about me reviewing this book, I was very excited to read it because of the story line. I mean, who wouldn't want a sneak peek into your past lives, especially with the love of your life. Though, maybe not these horrible ones Lylah kept having about losing William over and over again in each lifetime.
The story begins with Lylah and tells you her story, all about her shyness, and her love for singing, but also her fear of stage fright. In a crazy sort of events, befriending the most popular girl in school, she meets William, a music producer, and the love of her life. (Some might call it destiny perhaps). Their story, and the main plot, begins with that chance meeting. While on a date she gets hurt and sees a vision of her past life, but it is full of dread and fear. This keeps happening and by the end of the story she must choose whether to let him go and let him live, or choose true love and suffer the consequences, maybe even losing him for good. The book to me started off a bit slow. It felt repetitive when describing their love. The reader can really tell that they are in love because all of their thoughts, feelings, and words are about how much they love each other and how much they feel for each other. Now, I love a good romance book, but reader beware, if you are not the mushy type, this might not be for you. They are very lovey-dovey, sometimes a bit overwhelming.
The book takes off halfway through though, getting into all of the flashbacks. Once there, I kind of flew right through the last of the book. I actually enjoyed the book more during this time because the couple wasn't together and it was a nice change to all the love. The pain and anguish they felt made the book more realistic. Though it was sad and I kept wanting them together, it was a good addition to the book.
The ending was great! I love how she ended it and how the author explained the whole flashback thing in the storyline. It was very cool. I didn't see that coming. Overall it was a very good book. I recommend it to anyone who wants a good young adult romance book with a bit of suspense. The plot was new and interesting, the story believable, and the fact that parts of the story were taken from the author's own life events, makes it even better.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Go and get it, you will enjoy it!
More Than Words Can Say by Mari Suggs is a YA romance with a past lives twist. The story focuses on Lylah and her relationship with William. From the moment Lylah meets William, they are strangely drawn to each other and they fall in love immediately and deeply. The basic love story gets a twist when Lylah keeps getting glimpses of her past lives with William...and all of these past lives have horrible things happen.
The story was interesting and I have to say that the ending totally surprised me. I can't give any detail about the surprise ending because I don't want to spoil it for others. But suffice it to say, I totally did not see that coming! And I totally liked the twist at the end. Although the story was interesting, I felt that the author added too many unnecessary details and it slowed the pace of the book down.
The main characters, William and Lylah, were well developed and were likeable. I was a little overwhelmed by how sickly-sweet the love between William and Lylah was. I like a romance but they were so lovey-dovey all the time and it was a little over the top. Unfortunately, the author focused so much on Lylah and William that the secondary characters all felt a little flat.
I loved how the title was a saying between Lylah and William. The phrase "More Than Words Can Say" was so important to the book and had a lot of meaning to the characters.
Overall, this book is a cute YA romance that will appeal to readers looking for a story about soul mates destined to be together.
note - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Great book
This novel is fantastical and dark. This love story is so wonderfully romantic that has a lot of dark elements. So, if love a book that is romantic, dark, and has a hint of fantasy then this novel is the one for you. The romance story has you smiling, crying, and falling in love along with the characters. The end had a twist that I was not expecting and was a very nice surprise.
There's really nothing not to love about this novel. The storyline seems to be common in the beginning but there are plenty of twists that keep you intrigued all the way through. The characters are very three dimensional and although romance is one of the main themes of the novel, don't think you for one second you won't be going through a rollar coaster ride of emotions! The visualization effect of the composition of writing is what every reader needs and wants when reading a story and this novel delivers that. You must add this novel to your reading list!
